In the Shadow of Power

Shortly after his personal assistant, Günter Guillaume, was exposed as being an agent of the GDR in May 1974, Willy Brandt resigned from his office as chancellor of the Federal Republic of Germany (FRG). The Guillaume affair is regarded as being one of the most sensational political scandals of the FRG. To this day the affair raises questions and intrigues since Willy Brandt of all people, as holder of the 1971 Nobel peace prize and social democratic chancellor of the ”New Eastern Policy” stumbled over an agent from the east. How was an agent able to rise to the position of the chancellor’s personal assistant? What relationship did Brandt and Guillaume have? How did the close private as well as political surroundings of Brandt react to this scandal? And what made Brandt, a symbol of the German policy of détente, actually resign?

In the two-episode TV movie ”In the Shadow of Power” director and author Oliver Storz draws a thrilling scenario of the last few days of Brandt’s period as chancellor. He knowledgeably gives an insight into the balance of power within the social democratic party at that time as well as in the social-liberal coalition. Oliver Storz carefully tries to fathom out the influence of Herbert Wehner, Egon Bahr, Walter Scheel and the Minister of the Interior at that time, Hans-Dietrich Genscher, on Brandt’s decision to resign. In doing so, Storz draws a sensitive, complex portrait of Willy Brandt, who was a legend during his own lifetime.
