Farmers, blossoms, bee colonies
The number of flying insects has sunk by more than 75 percent between 1989 and 2016. Nature conservationists have sounded the alarm and many politicians are now aware of the problem: there are now an increasing number of promotion programmes aimed at creating meadows with wild flowers and strips of blossoming plants. The state of Lower Saxony alone has made available twelve million Euros for this purpose. Blooming areas along fields, path borders and in meadows are aimed at preventing insects from dying and promoting biodiversity.
Researchers are trying to ascertain whether this can succeed and whether blossoming strips are of any use at all. At the same time, innovative farmers, communities, private persons and even blossoming strip managers are making efforts to ensure that northern Germany is home to more blossoming plants in. No matter whether in the Hasetal, in Rettmer near Luneburg or in East Frisian Friedeburg: they are following completely different approaches for sustaining biodiversity and preventing insects from dying.
