Monatelang allein auf einer einsamen Insel leben: Was für viele Menschen ein Traum ist, wird jedes Jahr für einige Freiwillige wahr. Vom Frühjahr bis zum Herbst forschen die Vogelwarte der Naturschutzorganisation „Mellumrat“ auf der streng geschützten Vogelinsel Mellum im Herzen des Nationalparks Niedersächsisches Wattenmeer und leben vom Rest der Welt abgeschnitten.

Die Reportage begleitet die Naturschützer und Biologen von ihrer mühseligen Ankunft bis zu ihrer Abreise, wenn die kleine Insel wieder in eine Art Dornröschenschlaf verfällt. Mellum - a summer on the bird island

Living alone on a solitary island for months on end - what counts as a dream for many people comes true for a few volunteers every year: from spring to autumn, the bird wardens of the nature protection organisation “Mellumrat” carry out research on the strictly protected bird island Mellum in the heart of the Lower Saxony Wadden Sea National Park and live there cut off from the rest of the world.

The report accompanies the nature conservationists and biologists from their toilsome arrival to their departure, when the small island again falls into a sort of Sleeping Beauty slumber. The report presents impressive nature shots of Mellum’s fascinating ornithological world and documents the yearly cycle of a whole ecosystem from the breeding season in spring to the large bird migration in autumn - one of the last examples of genuine wilderness in Central Europe.
