ANGRY SPIRITS wirft einen poetischen Blick auf eine globale Herausforderung: die Bedrohung indigener Völker durch Umweltzerstörung und Klimakatastrophen. Der Film folgt der Suche nach Heilung von Ainur, einer jungen Mutter aus einer traditionellen Hirtenfamilie, die nach dem Zusammenbruch der Sowjetunion in extreme Armut stürzte. Sie lebt heute in Ulaanbaatar, der modernen Hauptstadt der Mongolei, und arbeitet als Tänzerin in einem Stripclub. Ainur fühlt sich unwohl, als würde sie von Geistern heimgesucht. Sie folgt dem Rat eines Schamanen und kehrt in das Land ihrer Vorfahren zurück. Auf ihrer Reise sieht sie sich mit der Zerstörung dieser einst atemberaubenden Landschaft konfrontiert und stellt sich die Frage, wie sie sich selbst und ihre Heimat heilen kann.
 
In ihrem hybriden Dokumentarfilm verwebt Iris Pakulla Eindrücke von den Landschaften der Wüste Gobi mit Szenen aus Ulaanbaatar und ungeschminkten Einblicken in Ainurs Nachtclubwelt.

Angry spirits - When spirits awaken

ANGRY SPIRITS takes a poetic look at a global challenge: the threat to indigenous peoples from environmental degradation caused and climate catastrophe. The film follows the quest for healing of Ainur, a young mother from a traditional herding family, who plunged into extreme poverty after the collapse of the Soviet Union. Now living in Mongolia's modern capital, Ulaanbaatar, she works as a dancer in a strip club. Ainur feels unwell, as if haunted by spirits, and follows the advice of a shaman and returns to the land of her ancestors. On her journey, she confronts the destruction of this once breath taking landscape and the question, how to heal herself and her home.
 
In her hybrid documentary film, Iris Pakulla weaves together impressions of the landscapes of the Gobi Desert by scenarios in Ulaanbaatar and unvarnished insights into Ainur's nightclub world.
