Das Wendland gehört zu den vielseitigsten Naturräumen in ganz Deutschland. Geprägt vom Streit um das Atommülllager Gorleben, sind es gerade die hier einheimischen Menschen, die den Einklang mit ihrer Umwelt suchen und der Natur ihrer Heimat den ersten Platz einräumen.

Von den Sanddünen der trockenen Nemitzer Heide im Osten, wo die Besenheide wächst, bis zu den sumpfig nassen Weiden für die Heckrinder bei Hitzacker: Das Wendland ist eine Region der Gegensätze und der Superlative. Auf dem Berg Höhbeck, genau über dem Salzstock des Atommülllagers Gorleben, ist die Artendichte fast doppelt so hoch wie im übrigen Land.

Die Reportage begleitet die Schäferfamilie Meinecke während der Lammzeit, Naturschützer bei der Wiesenmahd und der Apfelernte, und zeigt, wie schon vor 8.000 Jahren die Menschen im Einklang mit der Natur des Wendlandes lebten.
 

Wild Wendland

The Wendland is one of the most diverse natural environments in the whole of Germany. Shaped by the conflict surrounding the atomic waste disposal site in Gorleben, it is precisely here that the locals are looking for harmony with their environment and consider nature to be a top priority issue in their homeland.

From the sand dunes of the dry Nemitzer Moor to the east where Scots Heather grows, to the marshy wet pastures for Heck Cattle near Hitzacker, the Wendland is a region full of contrasts and superlatives. On the Höhbeck hill, located exactly above the salt dome of the Gorleben atomic waste disposal site, the density of species is almost twice as high as in the surrounding countryside.

The report accompanies the shepherd family Meinecke during the lambing season as well as nature conservationists mowing meadow grass and harvesting apples, and portrays how people lived in harmony with nature in the Wendland as much as 8000 years ago.
