Um der aufreibenden Landarbeit für den Großgrundbesitzer Pijlsma zu entgehen, macht sich der junge Take daran, den Weltrekord in einer sehr besonderen Sportart zu erobern: dem Pfahlsitzen. 500 Tage muss Take auf dem Pfahl bleiben und vertreibt sich die Zeit mit der Lektüre von Trotzki und Marx, denn sein Herz schlägt für die Arbeiterklasse. Und für Tjitske, seine Verlobte, die ihren “Athleten” rührend umsorgt. Als sie durch einen Unfall ihren Vater verliert, braucht sie dringend Takes Hilfe. Take aber will seinen Rekordversuch nicht abbrechen. Erst als die Hochzeitsglocken läuten, springt Take vorzeitig von seinem Pfahl und platzt in das Hochzeitsfest - zu spät: Tjitske hat ausgerechnet Rintje Pijlsma, den Sohn des Großbauern, geheiratet. Doch Takes Kampf um seine große Liebe und um den Weltrekord hat gerade erst begonnen.

Sportsman of the century

In order to dodge exhausting farm work for the big landowner Pijlsma, young Take sets out to break the world record in a very unusual sport discipline: sitting on top of a pole. Take must remain on top of the pole for 500 days. He kills time by reading the works of Trotzki and Marx, for his heart beats for the working class. And also for Tjitske, his fiancée, who takes great pains to tend to her “athlete’s” needs. After losing her father in an accident, she’s in urgent need of Take’s help. But Take doesn’t want to abandon his attempt to break the record. At the very moment when the wedding bells start ringing, Take prematurely jumps off his pole and lands in the midst of the wedding celebrations - too late: Tjitske has instead married Rintje Pijlsma, the son of the wealthy farmer. But Take’s fight for his great love and the world record has only just begun.
