Basierend auf einer wahren Begebenheit ist EIN FÜRSORGLICHER SOHN eine Geschichte über antike Mythen und modernen Wahnsinn. Der ehrgeizige Schauspieler Brad Macallam begeht in der Realität eine Tat, die er in einer griechischen Tragödie spielen soll: Er ermordet seine Mutter. In einer Serie von Rückblenden entsteht Brads Geschichte. Zu sehen ist ein Mann, dessen Welt aus dem Lot geraten ist. Er verliert nicht den Verstand, sondern er kann den Sinn der Welt nicht mehr wahrnehmen. Zusammen mit ihm tritt der Zuschauer ein in eine verrücktere und impulsivere Realität, in der Horror und Feindseligkeit lauern. Je mehr man versucht, sich zurechtzufinden, umso größer wird das Mysterium.
Inspired by true events, MY SON, MY SON, WHAT HAVE YE DONE? is a story about ancient myths and modern madness. Brad Macallam, an aspiring actor performing in a Greek tragedy, commits in reality the crime he is to enact in the play: he kills his mother. In a series of flashbacks, Brad’s tale begins to emerge. We see a man terribly at odds with the world around him. It’s not so much that Brad goes crazy but that the world around him starts to appear somehow awry. He doesn’t lose his sanity - he loses all sense of the world as sane. With him we enter an altogether stranger and more vivid reality, and sense the horror and menace that lurk there. As we struggle to understand, the mystery only deepens.

Werner Herzog *1942 in München; Studium der Geschichte, Literatur- und Theaterwissenschaften in München und Pittsburgh; einer der einflussreichsten Vertreter des „Neuen deutschen Films“; neben zahlreichen Spielfilmen auch dokumentarische Arbeiten; mit MY SON, MY SON und BAD LIEUTENANT war Herzog der erste Filmemacher, der mit zwei Werken im Wettbewerb um den „Goldenen Löwen“ in Venedig angetreten ist.
