Die Göhrde ist das größte zusammenhängende Mischwaldgebiet Norddeutschlands. Seltene Tiere haben hier ein Zuhause gefunden: Mufflons, die einzigen europäischen Wildschafe, die die meisten Menschen nur aus dem Wildpark kennen. Mittlerweile gilt das Muffelwild als heimisch in Niedersachsen. Aber auch, wenn es sich in den letzten 100 Jahren gut an den Lebensraum anpassen konnte, stellt nun die Rückkehr des Wolfes eine neue Herausforderung dar. Häufig wurden bereits durch den Wolf gerissene Mufflons gefunden.
Die Reportage begleitet den Muffelwildexperten und Wolfsberater Peter Pabel und zeigt, wie er die wilden Mufflons durch Einfangaktionen und Umsiedlungen vor dem Wolf zu schützen versucht.
Mouflons - wild sheep in Lower Saxony
The Göhrde is the largest contiguous mixed forest area in northern Germany. This is where rare animals have found a habitat: mouflons, the only European wild sheep that most people only know from game parks. In the meantime, mouflons are regarded as being indigenous in Lower Saxony. But even though the animal has been able to adapt well to this habitat over the past 100 years, the return of the wolf now poses a new challenge. Mouflons mauled by wolves have in fact often been found.
The report accompanies the mouflon expert and wolf consultant Peter Pabel and shows how he is trying to protect the wild mouflons from wolves by way of capture and resettlement campaigns.
