Ein sehr zurückhaltender Mensch, der sich selbst als Anonymus, als „Leerstelle“ begreift, wird zum Motor, zum heimlichen Autor einer großen Amerika-Erzählung.
Seine Stimme, aufgenommen 1981 im Zuge seines letzten Interviews, und die Charaktere, die er spielte, führen durch den Film - und auf einen Roadtrip quer durch die USA: von einem Ort namens Fonda, NY, über den Mittleren Westen, wo der Schauspieler aufwuchs, bis zum Pazifik. Und sie führen durch die Geschichte des Landes, von 1651 bis in die 1980er Jahre, als ein anderer Filmschauspieler US-Präsident wurde.
A documentary essay about the USA − viewed through the eyes of an iconic film actor. Henry Fonda and his roles reveal a dazzling and conflicted figure. A very private person who sees himself as anonymous, a ‘blank space’, becomes the driving force, the secret author of a great American narrative.
His voice, recorded in 1981 during his last interview, and the characters he played take us on a journey through film − and on a road trip across the USA: from a place called Fonda, NY, across the Midwest, where the actor grew up, to the Pacific. They also take us through the country's history, from 1651 to the 1980s, when another film actor became US president.
