In Hannover liegt der mit ca. 640 Hektar größte Stadtwald Europas: die Eilenriede. Sie ist Erholungsgebiet für Spaziergänger, Radfahrer und Jogger, aber auch Heimat von Wildtieren, wie z. B. Rehen, Hasen, Füchsen und mehr als 100 verschiedenen Vogelarten. Für die Forstwirte der Eilenriede ist die Arbeit deshalb immer ein Spagat zwischen Wirtschaftlichkeit, Sicherheit und Naturschutz.

Einerseits müssen sie z. B. dafür sorgen, dass niemand von herabstürzenden Ästen verletzt wird, andererseits muss der Lebensraum der Waldbewohner geschützt werden. Im Laufe der Zeit hat sich zudem der Grundwasserspiegel gesenkt und die Vegetation verändert. Ohne menschliches Eingreifen würde es irgendwann keine Eichen in der Eilenriede mehr geben. Die Reportage zeigt im Verlauf der Jahreszeiten, was es bedeutet, die Vielfalt des Stadtwaldes am Leben zu erhalten.
 

Hanover’s urban woodland - the Eilenriede

Hanover is home to the largest urban woodland in Europe: the Eilenriede. With an area of about 640 hectares, it is not only a recreational area for strollers, cyclists and joggers but also a habitat for wild animals such as, e.g. deer, rabbits, foxes and more than 100 different bird species. The work of the Eilenriede foresters is therefore always a balancing act between cost efficiency, safety and nature conservation.

On the one hand, they must ensure that, e.g. nobody is injured by falling branches while on the other hand, they must guarantee that the habitat of the forest animals is safeguarded. In addition, the groundwater level has sunk over the course of time and the vegetation has changed. Without human intervention, all the oaks in the Eilenriede would disappear at some point in time. The report illustrates what is entailed in maintaining the diversity of the urban woodland during the four seasons.
