1685 tobt in Frankreich zwischen Katholiken und Protestanten ein Krieg im Namen Gottes. König Ludwig XIV. sieht von den Hugenotten − der protestantischen Minderheit − seine Macht bedroht und löst mit einem Federstrich ihre Verfolgung aus. Wer seinem Glauben nicht abschwört, sieht oft keinen anderen Ausweg als zu fliehen. Deutsche Fürsten haben ihre Grenzen geöffnet, um die gut ausgebildeten Hugenotten anzuwerben. Viele Gebiete sind nach den Verwüstungen des Dreißigjährigen Krieges fast menschenleer und auf neue Arbeitskräfte angewiesen. Doch vielerorts stoßen die Hugenotten auf Widerstand, und das Ankommen in der Fremde ist schwer.
Nachfahren der Hugenotten wie Theodor Fontane, Carl Benz oder Paul Wallot haben Deutschland geprägt. Ihre Spuren finden sich bis heute, wie das Dokudrama eindrucksvoll beleuchtet.
Flight in the name of God - the Huguenots
In 1685, a war in the name of God raged in France between Catholics and Protestants. King Louis XIV thinks his power is threatened by the Huguenots − the Protestant minority − and triggers off their persecution with the single stroke of a pen. Whoever refuses to renounce his faith often has no other option than to flee. German dukes have opened their borders in order to recruit the well-trained Huguenots. Following the devastations of the Thirty Years War, many areas are almost devoid of people and dependent on a new workforce. But the Huguenots encounter resistance in many places and their arrival in a foreign country is difficult.
Descendants of the Huguenots such as Theodor Fontane, Carl Benz or Paul Wallot have all played a part in shaping Germany. As the docudrama impressively portrays, their influence is still evident even today.
