„Eigentlich zähle ich nur Bäume“, sagte der Forstmann Wolfram Zimmeck bescheiden, wenn man ihn nach seinem Beruf fragte. Dabei hatte Zimmeck fast die ganze Welt bereist, ein Institut für Klimaschutz und eines zur Förderung der Artenvielfalt im Wald gegründet. Das alles rückte radikal in den Hintergrund, als Zimmeck die Diagnose Krebs erhielt.

Zimmeck versuchte, dem Leben noch möglichst viel abzugewinnen: Er begann Klavier zu spielen und zu malen, absolvierte einen Tanzkurs und probierte sogar das Boxen aus. Zimmeck entwickelte dabei eine anrührende Weisheit: „Mein Sterben habe ich geregelt, jetzt kann ich leben.“ Am 13. August 2014 ist Wolfram Zimmeck im Hospiz in Hannover gestorben. Die Dokumentation begleitet ihn in den letzten sechs Monaten seines Lebens.

The man who counted the trees - about the good life and peaceful death of Wolfram Zimmeck

“All I really do is only count trees”, was the modest answer given by the forester Wolfram Zimmeck when asked about his job. The truth of the matter is, however, that Zimmeck travelled almost all over the world and founded an institute for climate protection as well as an institute for promoting the diversity of species in forests. When Zimmeck was diagnosed with cancer, all of this radically receded into the background.

Zimmeck always tried to make the most of his life: he began playing the piano and painting, completed a dancing course and even tried his hand at boxing. In so doing, Zimmeck developed a touching wisdom: “Now that I’ve tended to my dying, I can live.” Wolfram Zimmeck died in a hospice in Hanover on 13 August 2014. This documentary accompanies him during the last six months of his life.
