Her curiosity in the metropolis of Paris and her search for new avenues of expression in her art leads her to the impressionists and Egyptian portraits of mummies. In mummy paintings she discovers the precursors of her own art. She is also enthused by the new styles of the modern Parisian art scene. Modernity and antiquity flow into her works, and shape her new perception and individual style of painting. 

Paula Modersohn-Becker records her enthusiasm for the work of artists in the metropolis and her discovery of antiquity in an exchange of letters as well as in diaries. Based on her records, and shot at original locations, the film portrays important stages of the artist’s life.
