Ana Rosa findet ihren Präsidenten Evo Morales toll, weil er Kindern ab zehn Jahren das Recht auf Arbeit zugestanden hat. Sie bekommt bald einen Arbeitsausweis und glaubt, damit besser gegen Übergriffe geschützt zu sein. Für Evo Morales ist das neue Kindergesetz ein Akt der Befreiung von westlichen Normen. Kinderarbeit sei in der indigenen Kultur verankert und mache die Kinder stark. Die Vereinten Nationen dagegen sind empört, weil Bolivien gegen die Konvention zum Verbot der Kinderarbeit verstößt.

Die Reportage taucht ein in den Alltag der Kinderarbeiter von Potosí, auf den Märkten, in den Busbahnhöfen und den Bergwerken der Stadt. Während die elfjährige Ana Rosa gerne zur Arbeit geht, hat der zwölfjährige Elias täglich Todesangst. Er steht im maroden Bergwerk am Bohrhammer und arbeitet mit Dynamit. Jede Schicht ist ein Rendezvous mit dem Tod.
 

Ana Rosa and her right for Child Labour

Ana Rosa is very enthusiastic about her president Evo Morales because he granted children above the age of ten the right to work. She will soon be issued a work permit and believes this will give her better protection against assaults. From the point of view of Evo Morales the new child law is an act of liberation from western norms. In his opinion, child labour is anchored in indigenous culture and makes children resilient. The United Nations on the other hand are outraged because Bolivia is in violation of the Convention on the Prohibition of Child Labour.

The report immerses us in the everyday life of child labourers from Potosí - on the markets, in bus stations and in the city’s mines. Whereas eleven year-old Ana Rosa likes going to work, twelve year-old Elias is scared to death every day. He works with a hammer drill and handles dynamite in a dilapidated mine. Every shift is a rendezvous with death.
