Als 1913 Victoria Luise Prinzessin von Preußen den Prinzen Ernst August von Hannover heiratet, tanzen Welfen, Hohenzollern und der europäische Hochadel den letzten Walzer im Berliner Stadtschloss. Zur glanzvollen Vermählung versammelten sich die gekrönten Häupter aller europäischen Fürstenhäuser. Ein letztes Mal ist das Schloss der Nabel Deutschlands, bevor es zu einem Neben- und Nicht-Ort der Weimarer Republik, des Nationalsozialismus und der DDR wird.
In Form einer „Graphic Documentary", einer aufwendig entwickelten Verbindung aus szenischem Spiel und Animation, rekonstruiert der Film das prunkvolle Heiratsspektakel. Gezeigt werden die Akteure und Statisten, Strippenzieher und Saboteure einer Inszenierung, die auf der Bühne des Stadtschlosses zum letzten Mal den schönen Schein einer zum Untergang verurteilten Welt beschwor.
1913 - The emperor’s last dance
When the Princess of Prussia, Victoria Luise, marries Prince Ernst August of Hanover in 1913, the Welfes, members of the Hohenzollern family and the European high nobility dance their last waltz in the Berlin City Palace. The crowned heads of all of Europe’s houses of nobility assembled to celebrate the spectacular wedding. This is the last time that the palace is the heart of Germany before it becomes a minor and non-existent location in the Weimar Republic, under National Socialism and in the GDR.
The film reconstructs the magnificent wedding spectacle in the form of a graphic documentary, a lavishly developed combination of scenic play and animation. It portrays the protagonists and accompanying players as well as the string-pullers and saboteurs of a staged enactment on the floor of the Berlin palace, which, for the last time, conjures up a glorious image of a world doomed to decline.
