In OUT OF EXIL - THE PHOTOGRAPHY OF FRED STEIN begibt sich Fred Steins Sohn Peter auf Spurensuche. Herzstück des Films sind dabei die Fotoarbeiten seines Vaters. Zusammen mit Archivmaterial, Musik und Familienfotos entsteht ein vielschichtiges, intimes Porträt.
Fred Stein starb, bevor die Fotografie als Kunstform anerkannt wurde. Seine Fotos lagen vergessen im Schrank. Peter Stein macht sie nun für die Öffentlichkeit zugänglich − im Film und bei Ausstellungen weltweit.
Parisian street scenes during the 1930s, New York during the 1940s and fascinating portraits of famous personalities: although Fred Stein’s photographs are known by many, only a few people know his name. Who was this man who fled the Nazis, first to Paris and then to New York, and yet retained a positive and often humorous view of the world despite all these upheavals?
In OUT OF EXIL - THE PHOTOGRAPHY OF FRED STEIN, Fred Stein’s son Peter embarks on a search for clues. His father’s photographic works constitute the core of the film. A multi-layered, intimate portrait is created by combining archive material, music and family photos.
Fred Stein died before photography was recognised as a form of art. His photographs lay dormant and forgotten in a cupboard. Peter Stein has now made them accessible to the public - in the film and in exhibitions worldwide.
