Zwei Frauen wollen in Wolfsburg die Asche ihres verstorbenen Vaters abholen. Dass sie Halbschwestern sind, dass ihr Vater zwei Familien hatte, nämlich eine in Deutschland und eine in Italien, erfahren sie erst jetzt. Gemeinsam machen sie eine Reise zum Geburtshaus ihres Vaters. Dort erleben sie noch einmal die wichtigsten Stationen seines Lebens zwischen zwei Ländern und Kulturen.

Das Dokudrama arbeitet das fiktive Schicksal des italienischen Einwanderers Agatino Rossi szenisch auf, ergänzt durch Schilderungen von Zeitzeugen und eindrucksvolles Archivmaterial.

Männer aus Mittel- und Süditalien waren die ersten sogenannten Gastarbeiter in Deutschland: Sie verließen ab Mitte der 1950er-Jahre ihre Heimat, in der Hoffnung auf Arbeit und ein besseres Leben. Zwar wurden vor allem in der Industrie händeringend Arbeitskräfte gebraucht, dennoch waren die Migranten isoliert.

Der Film kommt bei seiner Spurensuche zu überraschenden Ergebnissen. Bei der heute als gelungen angesehenen Integration der Italiener in Deutschland gab es erhebliche Anfangsschwierigkeiten. Vorurteile wie „Südländer sind unzuverlässig und schnell mit dem Messer“ waren weit verbreitet und erinnern an ähnliche Diskussionen im Zuge der Flüchtlingskrise von 2015.

Amara Terra Mia - my bitter country

Two women intend to collect the ashes of their dead father in Wolfsburg. They only get to know now that they are half-sisters and that their father had two families, one in Germany and one in Italy. Together, they travel to the house where their father was born. Here, they again experience the most important phases of his life between two countries and cultures.

The docudrama scenically works through the fictitious fate of the Italian immigrant Agatino Rossi, supplemented by accounts of contemporary witnesses and impressive archive material.

Men from the middle and south of Italy were the first so-called migrant workers in Germany: they left their home country from the mid-1950s onwards, hoping for work and a better life. Even though industry desperately needed workers, the migrants were nevertheless isolated.

Delving into the past, the film comes to some surprising conclusions. Even though Italian migrants are nowadays considered to be fully integrated into German society, they were nevertheless faced with enormous difficulties at first. Prejudices such as "Southerners are unreliable and quick to draw a knife" were widespread and are reminiscent of similar discussions during the refugee crisis of 2015.
