There is an important reason for this popularity: over the past two decades, Norderney has consciously cast off its "grubby image" and has set its sights on more refined guests. Splendid buildings such as the “Kurtheater” and the Conversation House characterise the island. This is accompanied by well-preserved natural surroundings and an extensive beach in the Wadden Sea National Park. Modern hotels have been constructed and the famous milk bar attracts visitors just as much as fashionable shops lining the beach.
