Alaska - hier liegen die eisigen Berge der Brooks Range, die weiten Tundren der North Slope und Amerikas unzugänglichster Nationalpark „Gates of the Arctic“: 34.287 Quadratkilometer weglose Wildnis, so unberührt von Menschenhand wie kaum ein anderes Gebiet der Erde. Riesige Karibuherden durchqueren diesen Nationalpark, Grizzlys fischen nach Lachsen und mächtige Elchbullen durchwandern eine unendliche Wildnis. Aber der lange, bitterkalte Winter fordert sehr spezielle Anpassungen. Meisterhaft haben das die „Arktischen Ziesel“ gelöst: Sie können im Winterschlaf ihre Körpertemperatur unter den Gefrierpunkt absenken - einmalig!

Nach Norden öffnet sich der „Gates of the Arctic“-Nationalpark in eine gigantische Ebene, die bis zur arktischen Küste Alaskas reicht. Dort verbringen Eisbären den Sommer. Sie warten auf das Zufrieren des Nordpolarmeeres.

Alaska - this is where you’ll find the icy mountains of the Brooks Range, the vast tundra of the North Slope and America’s most inaccessible National Park “Gates of the Arctic”: 34,287 sq.km of trackless wilderness, unspoilt by man as hardly any other region in the world. Huge caribou herds make their way through this National Park, grizzlies fish for salmon and massive Bull Moose roam across an endless wilderness. But the long, bitterly cold winters make very special adaptations necessary. This has been solved brilliantly by the “Arctic gophers”: they are able to lower their body temperature below freezing during hibernation - a fantastic feat!

To the north, the “Gates of the Arctic” National Park opens up into a gigantic plain that extends as far as Alaska’s Arctic coast. This is where polar bears spend the summer waiting for the Arctic Ocean to freeze over.
