Im Frühjahr 1898 kommt die Malerin Paula Becker in die Künstlerkolonie Worpswede. Dort lernt sie die Bildhauerin Clara Westhoff kennen und verliebt sich in den verheirateten Maler Otto Modersohn. Getrieben vom Drang ihrer künstlerischen Entwicklung und der unerfüllten Liebe zu Otto Modersohn, reist Paula nach Paris und taucht in die inspirierende Atmosphäre der Weltstadt ein. Aufgespannt zwischen einer romantisch-platonischen Liebe zum Dichter Rainer Maria Rilke, der leidenschaftlichen Beziehung zu Otto Modersohn und ihrer avantgardistischen, künstlerischen Entwicklung lebt Paula teils in der ländlichen Idylle von Worpswede, teils in der sirrenden Luft von Paris. Nach ihrem künstlerischen Durchbruch in Paris finden Paula und Otto wieder zusammen. Sie erleben eine kurze, aber sehr glückliche Zeit, bevor Paula gänzlich überraschend mit 31 Jahren im Wochenbett stirbt.

Paula Modersohn-Becker - the story of a painter

In the spring of 1898 the painter, Paula Becker, joins the Worpswede artists’ colony. Here she gets to know the sculptress, Clara Westhoff, and falls in love with the married painter, Otto Modersohn. Spurred on by the urge to develop her artistic talents and her unfulfilled love with Otto Modersohn, Paula travels to Paris and plunges into the inspirational atmosphere of the metropolis. Torn between a romantic-platonic relationship with the poet, Rainer Maria Rilke, her passionate relationship with Otto Modersohn, and her own development as an avant-garde artist, Paula lives partly in the rural paradise of Worpswede, and partly in the buzzing atmosphere of Paris. Following her artistic breakthrough in Paris, Paula and Otto finally come together. They experience a short but very happy time together, until Paula dies unexpectedly in confinement at the age of 31.
