Das Schaf ist das wohl unterschätzteste Tier der Welt. Ohne es wäre die Menschheit nicht da, wo sie heute steht. Seit 11.000 Jahren liefern Schafe dem Menschen Nahrung und Kleidung. Archäologen entdeckten in Äthiopien Spuren ihrer Wanderung auf andere Kontinente. Schafe sind bis heute in vielen Teilen der Welt Lebensgarant und Wirtschaftsmotor.
Vielerorts haben sie ihre Bedeutung behalten: In der Lüneburger Heide wäre der Erhalt der Kulturlandschaft ohne sie unmöglich. Auf Sardinien gibt es mehr Schafe als Menschen, auf dem Balkan ziehen Hirten wie früher mit ihren Herden ins Gebirge. Das anspruchslose Schaf ist ein Meister der Anpassung an nahezu jegliche Umweltbedingung − und wird damit wohl auch in einer Welt des Klimawandels eine Zukunft haben. PLANET DER SCHAFE begibt sich auf Spurensuche − bei Schäfern und Züchtern in aller Welt.
Planet Sheep
Sheep are probably the most underestimated animals in the world. Without them, mankind would not be where it is today. For 11,000 years, sheep have provided humans with food and clothing. In Ethiopia, archaeologists have discovered traces of their migration to other continents. Sheep are still a guarantor of life and an economic motor in many parts of the world.
Sheep have retained their importance in many places: in the Luneburg Heath, preserving the cultivated landscape would be impossible without them. In Sardinia, there are more sheep than people; in the Balkans, shepherds guide their flocks into the mountains just as they did in the past. The undemanding sheep is a master of adapting to almost any environmental condition − and will thus probably have a future even in a world of climate change. “PLANET DER SCHAFE” embarks on a search for traces − among shepherds and breeders all over the world.
