In Deutschland gibt es über 550 Wildbienenarten. Doch die Bestände sind stark zurückgegangen: Die Hälfte aller Wildbienen ist vom Aussterben bedroht. Viele Menschen denken, dass die Honigbienen vom Bienensterben betroffen sind, aber es sind die Wildbienen, die gefährdet sind.

Braunschweig will dagegen ankämpfen und die erste „Bienenhauptstadt“ Deutschlands werden. Auf 16 Hektar Stadtgebiet sollen Wiesen, Blühstreifen und Staudenbeete entstehen, die insbesondere Wildbienen, aber auch anderen Insekten Schutz, Nahrung und Behausungen bieten. Viele Braunschweiger schließen sich der Aktion an. Dass eine gesamte Stadt sich um den Wildbienenschutz kümmert, ist neu und ein Trend, der Hoffnung macht. On the road to becoming a bee capital city

In Germany there are more than 550 species of wild bees. But stocks have fallen sharply: half of all wild bees are threatened by extinction. Although many people think that honey bees are affected by a diminution of bee populations, it is in fact wild bees that are endangered.

Brunswick intends to reverse this trend and become Germany’s first “bee capital city”. On an urban area of 16 hectares, it is planned to create meadows, flower strips and perennial beds, which will offer protection, nourishment and habitats to wild bees in particular, but also to other insects. Many Brunswick residents are joining this campaign. The fact that a whole city is concerned about the protection of wild bees is something new and a trend that promises hope.
