Für die Deiche an der Küste ist jede Sturmflut eine Bewährungsprobe. Dann stellt sich heraus, ob die Mitarbeiter des Küstenschutzes ihre Arbeit gut gemacht haben. Das ganze Jahr über waren sie in Niedersachsen im Einsatz, um die Schäden zu beheben, die das Orkantief „Xaver“ Ende 2013 hinterlassen hat. Tonnenweise wurden auf den Inseln Juist, Wangerooge und Spiekeroog Sandmassen bewegt, um die schadhaften Stellen zu beheben und die entstandenen Lücken zu schließen. Auf Wangerooge wurden 2014 nicht nur die Dünenabbrüche repariert, sondern es wurde auch mit dem Neubau eines Deiches begonnen. Zwei Schiffe waren dafür Tag und Nacht im Einsatz.

Waves, wind and coastal protection

Every tidal surge is a test of resilience for dykes along the coast. Such events reveal whether staff responsible for coastal protection have done their job properly. Over a full year they were working in Lower Saxony to repair the damage caused by the severe low-pressure system “Xaver” at the end of 2013. On the islands of Juist, Wangerooge and Spiekeroog, many tons of sand were moved to repair damaged dyke sections and fill breaches caused by the storm.
In 2014, not only dune breakoffs were repaired but work also began on the construction of a new dyke. For this purpose, two ships were in operation day and night.
