Viele Bäume machen noch keinen Wald - Spaziergängern in Niedersachsen ist oft gar nicht bewusst, dass sie sich nicht in einem Wald befinden, sondern meistens in einem Forst. Der Unterschied ist erheblich, denn im Forst stehen nicht Artenvielfalt und natürliche Entwicklung im Vordergrund, sondern Wirtschaftlichkeit. Die Folge ist ein erschreckender Artenschwund.

Doch es gibt ein Umdenken. Einer der Pioniere des naturnahen Waldes in Niedersachsen, Dr. Wolf-Eberhard Barth, erster Leiter des Nationalparks Harz, zeigt, welche Vorteile ein naturbelassener Wald für die Artenvielfalt von Flora und Fauna mit sich bringt. Er erklärt, welche Maßnahmen zur Waldentwicklung notwendig sind. Die Dokumentation zeigt die Entstehung, das Wachsen und das Vergehen des Waldes beim Wandel zum naturnahen Wald.

Many trees don’t make a wood - walkers in Lower Saxony are often not aware that they are not in a wood but mostly in a forest. The difference is considerable, for the diversity of species and natural development are not of central importance in a forest but rather profitability. The result is an alarming decline in the diversity of species.

But attitudes are now changing. One of the pioneers of promoting natural-state woods in Lower Saxony, Dr. Wolf-Eberhard Barth, director-in-chief of the Harz National Park, demonstrates the advantages to be gained from woods allowed to return to their natural state regarding the diversity of species of both flora and fauna. He explains the measures necessary to guarantee the development of woods. The documentary portrays the genesis, growth and degradation of a wood during its transition to a natural-state wood.
