Die Ilmenau ist Lebensraum für viele geschützte Arten und der größte und wichtigste Fluss der Lüneburger Heide. Einzigartige Naturräume sind hier rund um die Heidestadt Uelzen erhalten. Die Ilmenau und ihre Nebenflüsse verwandeln die Landschaft in eine immerfeuchte Oase in der trockenen Lüneburger Heide.

Viele bedrohte Arten wie Seeadler, Flussperlmuschel oder Fischotter haben hier ihren Lebensraum. Auch die Bachforelle, der Eisvogel oder der Feuersalamander finden hier noch ökologisch intakte Oasen. Mit über 3.500 Biotopflächen und 18 Naturschutzgebieten gehört der Landkreis zu den natur- und wasserreichsten in ganz Norddeutschland.

Die Reportage zeigt den Artenreichtum entlang der Ilmenau und ihrer Zuläufe und begleitet engagierte Menschen bei ihrem Einsatz für den Schutz wichtiger Lebensräume.

Oases along the Ilmenau

The Ilmenau is a habitat for many protected species and is the largest and most important river in the Luneburg Heath. Unique natural environments have been preserved around the Heath town of Uelzen. The Ilmenau and its tributaries have transformed the landscape into a permanently damp oasis in the dry Luneburg Heath.

This area provides a habitat for many endangered species such as the sea eagle, the freshwater pearl mussel and the otter. The brown trout, the kingfisher and the European salamander find oases in this region which are ecologically still intact. With over 3,500 biotopes and 18 nature conservation areas, the rural district ranks among the most nature-rich and water-rich areas in the whole of North Germany.
