In Hannover sind es die Biber, am Dümmer die Kormorane und im Emsland die Wölfe - wilde Tiere, die hier heimisch waren, dann verjagt und kurz vor ihrer endgültigen Ausrottung unter Schutz gestellt wurden. Jetzt erobern sie den Norden für sich zurück. Eine Freude für Naturliebhaber:innen. Doch für Landwirt:innen, Fischer:innen und Förster:innen sind die tierischen Rückkehrer eine Gratwanderung, denn Biber fällen Bäume, Kormorane fressen Fische und Wölfe reißen Schafe. Für manche Landbewohner:innen ist das existenzbedrohend.
Die Reportage begleitet Schäfer:innen, Förster:innen und Fischer:innen, die ihre Berufe im Einklang mit den tierischen Rückkehrern ausüben und oft zwischen Natur- und Tierschutz stehen.
A curse or a blessing? Beavers, wolves and comorants are back again
In Hanover it’s the beavers, in the Dummer, the cormorants and in Emsland, the wolves − wild animals that were once indigenous here, then driven away and finally placed under protection shortly before their extinction. Now they are reclaiming the north for themselves. A joy for nature lovers. But for farmers, fishermen and foresters, the return of the animals is a balancing act, because beavers cut down trees, cormorants eat fish and wolves kill sheep. For some rural dwellers, this threatens their very existence.
The report accompanies shepherds, foresters and fishermen who carry out their work in harmony with the returning animals, but are often caught up between nature conservation and animal protection issues.
