Japan is proud of its thousand year-old monarchy, which dates back to 660 B.C. But traditionalists are now expressing concern about the oldest monarchy in the world: Crown Prince Naruhito and Princess Masako do not have a son to succeed to the throne. Their daughter Aiko, born in 2001, is their only child. As the 127th Tenno, should she be allowed to become the Empress of Japan? This question divides Japan. Rolf Seelmann-Eggebert has spoken with reformists and conservatives in Tokyo: if necessary, the traditionalists are considering the nomination of a distant relative of the imperial family as successor to the throne.
