Dance of the Navajos - a tradition that promises hope for the future
The documentary portrays life in the “Navajo Nation Reservation“, the largest Indian reservation in the USA. Occupation of this land by the Navajos (or Diné Indians) was promised by contract in 1868. Up to the present, this small state is a reservation in legal terms. The 265,000 Navajos are self-governing. They have their own president, their own university, their own pension scheme, their own hospitals and their own judiciary. The young Navajo Indians, in particular, have been raised bilingually and speak fluent Navajo and American English. Although they live in American culture, they are consciously aware of their roots.
The age and splendour of this Indian culture is revealed when all 392 tribes from America and Canada meet up in New Mexico for their biggest festival, the “PowWow Gathering“, which lasts several days.
