Die Reportage begleitet vier besondere Fähren und ihre Kapitäne und wirft einen Blick hinter die Kulissen des Fährverkehrs: die Borkum-Fähre „Ostfriesland“, die auf einen umweltfreundlichen Flüssiggasantrieb umgestellt werden soll; die Gierseilfähre in Polle im Landkreis Holzminden, die ausschließlich durch die Strömung der Weser angetrieben und von einem ehemaligen Pastor gesteuert wird; die über hundert Jahre alte Schwebefähre in Osten im Landkreis Cuxhaven, ein architektonisches Baudenkmal, das zahlreiche Touristen in den kleinen Ort lockt; und die schwierige Passage einer der wenigen Frachtfähren, die von Cuxhaven aus Gefahrgut über die Nordsee an Englands Ostküste bringt.

There are many places in Lower Saxony where nothing works without ferries. Especially in spring and summer, many people rely on this means of transport for crossing rivers and the North Sea. The report accompanies four special ferries and their captains and takes a look behind the scenes of ferry transport: the Borkum ferry “Ostfriesland”, which is planned to be refitted with an environmentally-friendly liquid gas engine; the reaction ferry in Polle in the district of Holzminden, which is solely driven by the current of the river Weser and is steered by a former vicar; the over one hundred year-old transporter bridge in Osten in the district of Cuxhaven, an architectural monument that attracts numerous tourists to the small parish; and the difficult passage of one of the few freight ferries that transports hazardous goods from Cuxhaven across the North Sea to England’s east coast.
