In den Bremer Stadtteilen Oberneuland und Borgfeld liegen die Wümmewiesen, die als größtes Naturschutzgebiet Bremens zahlreichen Tieren und Pflanzen kostbaren Lebensraum bieten. Seit 1987 ist hier durch massive Renaturierung entlang des Flusses Wümme ein wertvolles Ökosystem mit hoher Artenvielfalt entstanden.  Doch wegen der Vertiefung der nahen Weser dringt immer mehr Wasser in die Wümme, Fließgeschwindigkeit und Tidenhub nehmen zu. Die Folge: Zwei Mal am Tag stehen viele Bereiche der Wümmewiesen über einen Meter unter Wasser oder fallen gänzlich trocken. Eine Gefahr für viele Tiere und Pflanzen. Der Film begleitet Gunnar Oertel und sein Team vom Verein NordwestNatur bei Natur- und Tierschutzmaßnahmen und zeigt auch, mit welchen Mitteln der Bremische Deichverband sich für den Erhalt wertvoller Lebensräume in den Wümmewiesen engagiert.

Engagement in a nature paradise: threatened water meadows along the river Wümme

The Wümme water meadows, located in the Oberneuland and Borgfeld city districts of Bremen, constitute the city’s largest nature conservation area and provide important habitats for numerous animal and plant species. Since 1987, extensive renaturation along the Wümme river has resulted in a valuable Ecosystem with high biodiversity. Due to deepening of the nearby river Weser, however, an increasing amount of water now flows into the Wümme, resulting in higher flow velocities and a larger tidal range. As a consequence of this, many parts of the Wümme water meadows are either more than one metre under water twice a day or are completely exposed. This presents a danger for many animals and plants. The film accompanies Gunnar Oertel and his team from the northwest nature association (“Verein NordwestNatur”) during their nature and animal protection work and also shows the way in which the Bremen dyke association (“Bremischer Deichverband”) is committed to the preservation of valuable habitats in the Wümme water meadows.
