Küstenschifffahrt war schon immer ein bedeutender Wirtschaftsfaktor in Deutschland und ganz Europa. Zur Blütezeit der kleinen Frachtsegler vor gut 100 Jahren fuhren Tausende von ihnen auf Nord- und Ostsee und den großen Flüssen. Moderne Technik führte zu ihrem Untergang: Dampf- und Motorschiffe waren schneller, konnten mehr Fracht transportieren und blieben von Wind und Tidenstrom unabhängig. Die kleinen Frachtsegler verschwanden aus dem Alltag an der Küste. Der Film begleitet die letzten Frachtsegler auf Nord- und Ostsee und der Unterelbe. Szenen vom Alltag an Bord geben Einblick in das vermeintlich romantische, in Wirklichkeit aber extrem harte Leben der Küstenschiffer.

Waiting for the wind - the forgotten German cargo sailing ships

Coastal shipping has always been an important economic factor in Germany and the whole of Europe. In the heyday of small cargo sailing ships over 100 years ago, thousands of them sailed in the North and Baltic Sea as well as on large rivers. Modern technology led to their extinction: steam and motor ships were faster, could transport more cargo, and were independent of the vagaries of wind and tidal currents. The small cargo sailing ships disappeared from everyday life along the coast. The film accompanies the last cargo sailing ships in the North and Baltic sea as well as on the lower Elbe. Scenes of everyday life on board provide an insight into the seemingly romantic, but in fact extremely hard lives of the coastal skippers.
