Denn „Lotti“, „Otto“ und die anderen 500 Brutpaare leben auf einer künstlichen Brutinsel und werden seit ihrer Geburt von Prof. Dr. Peter Becker von der Vogelwarte Helgoland mit modernsten elektronischen Methoden beobachtet, ein weltweit einzigartiges Projekt. Einzigartig sind diese Daten deshalb, weil es nirgendwo auf der Welt ein ähnliches Experiment mit frei lebenden Tieren gibt, die Informationen über Gewicht, Fang- und Bruterfolg rund um die Uhr per Funk liefern - vom Menschen ungestört.
