Der Dokumentarfilm zeigt anlässlich des 40-jährigen Jubiläums der Universität Bremen das Uni-Leben aus ungewöhnlichen Perspektiven und gibt Einblicke in Forschung und Studium. Rektoren, Hochschullehrer, ehemalige Studierende, Dienstleister und Politiker erzählen, wie sie die Entwicklung der Universität erlebten. In der Gründungsphase des Bremer Reformmodells als „Rote Kaderschmiede“ abgestempelt, ist sie heute als führendes Wissenschaftszentrum im Nordwesten auf dem Weg zur Elite-Uni.

Umfangreiches Archivmaterial lässt die politischen Auseinandersetzungen um das „Bremer Modell“ in den 60er, 70er und 80er Jahren wieder lebendig werden. Ein unterhaltsamer, aber auch nachdenklicher Film, bei dem sich am Bremer Beispiel die Frage aufdrängt, ob die modernen Universitäten in Deutschland auf dem richtigen Weg sind.
 

From Marx to Darwin: University of Bremen – a journey through time

To commemorate the 40th Anniversary of the University of Bremen, the documentary portrays university life from unusual perspectives and gives an insight into research and study courses. Vice chancellors, university lecturers, former students, service providers and politicians tell about how they experienced the development of the university. Once branded as a “training ground for the far left” during the founding phase of the Bremen reform model, it now ranks as a leading scientific centre in the north west on the road to becoming an elite university.

A wealth of archive material again brings to life the political disputes over the "Bremen Model" in the 60’s, 70’s and 80’s. An entertaining and at the same time contemplative film, which, considering the example of Bremen, poses the question as to whether modern universities in Germany are treading the right path.
