Der japanische Zuwendungs-Roboter Paro revolutioniert die Therapie Demenzerkrankter – und führt zu einer kontroversen Debatte über das Wohl und Wehe emotionaler Robotik in der Altenpflege. Paro hat die Form einer Babyrobbe, weiches weißes Fell und große schwarze Kulleraugen. Er freut sich über Ansprache und Berührung, wird täglich zutraulicher – und manchmal traurig, wenn man ihn nicht beachtet. Paro weckt Gefühle in seinem Gegenüber, obwohl er selbst keine hat: Er ist ein lernender Computer im Körper eines Kuscheltiers.
Die Dokumentation beleuchtet das Thema mit multiperspektivischem Blick und stiftet zugleich zu einer Frage an, die direkt in die persönliche Lebenswelt führt: Würde ich meiner demenzerkrankten Mutter eine elektronische Kuschelrobbe schenken?
 

Squeeze Me – Can Cuddling Computers Be Therapists?

The Japanese attention-giving robot Paro has revolutionised the therapy of dementia patients – and has led to a controversial debate about the pros and cons of emotional robotics in the care of the aged. Paro is shaped like a baby seal, with soft white fur and large black eyes. It expresses pleasure when it’s talked to and stroked, becomes more trustful from day to day – and sometimes sad, if he’s ignored. Paro awakens feelings in his counterpart, even though he himself doesn’t have any: he’s a learning computer embodied in a cuddly animal.
The documentary takes a closer look at this issue from a multi-perspective viewpoint and at the same time poses a question directly addressed to the world of human experience: would I give my mother suffering from dementia an electronic cuddle seal as a present?
