„Alles in allem ist ein Diktator einfach ein Künstler, der fähig ist, seinen Egoismus vollständig zu verwirklichen. Es ist eher eine Frage der Ästhetik, ob aus ihm ein Baudelaire oder Bolintineanu, ein Ludwig XIV. oder Nicolae Ceausescu wird. Von einem formalen Standpunkt aus zeigt DIE AUTOBIOGRAFIE DES NICOLAE CEAUSESCU, dass es möglich ist, ausschließlich bereits existierendes Material zu nutzen, um Filme zu schaffen, die die jüngere Vergangenheit in einer epischen Form ähnlich der des historisierenden Spielfilms behandeln. Dies ist daher vor allem ein syntaktischer Versuch, bei dem die Montage eine doppelte Rolle spielt: Einmal die Inszenierung, die die als solche in den Archivmustern nicht existierenden Szenen erschafft, und dann den klassischen Schnitt, der die Szenen miteinander verbindet. Vielleicht sind wir Zeugen des Entstehens eines neuen Filmgenres.” Andrei Ujica

It is a mere question of aesthetic level, whether he turns out to be Baudelaire or Bolintineanu, Louis XVI or Nicolae Ceausescu. From a formal point of view, THE AUTOBIOGRAPHY OF NICOLAE CEAUSESCU proves that it is possible to use existing images alone to create films focused on recent history, yet with an epic vein similar to that of historical fiction cinema. This is an eminently syntactic endeavour, where montage plays a twofold part: mise-en-scene connecting scenes together, as it builds scenes that do not exist as such in archive samples, and classical editing, connecting scenes together.
