Im Pazifik heißt ein Wirbelsturm Taifun: der große Wind. Göttlich soll er sein, und seit Menschengedenken ist er so zerstörerisch wie überraschend. Mit Hilfe von Supercomputern und Satelliten ist es Taifunforschern in den letzten dreißig Jahren gelungen, wenigstens auf 150 Kilometer genau die Zugbahn vorherzusagen - aber nur für die nächsten 24 Stunden. Wie stark ein Sturm wird, ist weiter ein Rätsel. Hitzig streiten die Forscher auch darum, ob der Klimawandel die Taifune verstärkt. Eine wichtige Frage angesichts der Tatsache, dass immerhin eine Milliarde Menschen jeden Sommer im Bannkreis der Taifune leben.
Der Film zeigt die Entstehung, den Zug, das Wüten und die Folgen eines Taifuns. Entstanden aus einem Häufchen Wolken im Zentralpazifik, erzeugt er nach einer Woche Verkehrschaos und Zerstörungen im Raum Tokio.

The Path of Typhoons

A cyclone in the Pacific is called a typhoon: the big wind. It is said to be divine, and from time immemorial, is just as destructive as unexpected. With the aid of supercomputers and satellites, scientists have managed in the past 30 years to predict the path of a typhoon to a precision of at least 150 kilometres, even though this only applies to the next 24 hours. How strong a storm will become still remains a mystery. There is also a heated debate among experts as to whether typhoons may intensify as consequence of climate change. An important question, considering the fact that a billion people live in the hazard zone of typhoons every summer.
The film shows the emergence, the passage, the ravaging and the consequences of a typhoon. Originating from a small bunch of clouds in the Central Pacific, it is responsible for causing traffic chaos and destruction in the Tokyo area after just one week.
