Regisseurin und Kunsthistorikerin Grit Lederer reiste in die Kunstzentren der damaligen Zeit - nach Sevilla, Madrid, Toledo und Valladolid - und tauchte in die Welt des 17. Jahrhunderts ein. Dabei stand eine Frage im Mittelpunkt: Inwiefern spiegelt die Kunst die weltweite Vormachtstellung Spaniens zur Zeit des Barock wieder?
 

El siglo de oro - the golden age of Spanish art

The documentary recounts the fascinating diversity of Spanish art during its century of greatest success. Spanish art had its heyday in the 17th century: the artists El Greco, Diego Rodríguez de Silva y Velázquez, Bartolomé Esteban Murillo and Francisco de Zurbarán made a tremendous impact by way of their realism and their ability to paint portraits with a high degree of psychological expression. The huge wood sculptures by Gregorio Fernández also made a lasting impression on account of their overwhelming expression of suffering and pain.

The director and art historian Grit Lederer travelled to the art centres of the time - to Seville, Madrid, Toledo and Valladolid - and immersed herself in the world of the 17th century. This raises a central question: to what extent does art reflect the worldwide supremacy of Spain during the Baroque period?
